Frequently Asked Questions – Firmware Update (Reset)
Most modern printers have toner refill protection. When the toner counter reaches a predetermined value (usually between 500-800 or 1000-1500 pages, depending on the model), the printer stops printing, even if there is still toner available. Updating the firmware disables this counter control associated with the memory chip (CRUM), allowing you to refill cartridges without problems and save significantly by avoiding the need to replace cartridges due to the blockage.
Yes, the reset firmware is generated only once. After updating your device with the reset firmware, chip control is permanently disabled, both in the toner and in the imaging unit (if present).
⚠ Important: If the printer driver or software offers an official firmware update, decline this option, as it may revert the update and require a new reset.
Yes! Even if you use compatible devices. But there’s a way to reverse this: reinstalling the original firmware. Contact us for more information.
No! The firmware is made specifically for your device. We offer discounts for larger quantities and regular buyers.
The toner counter is automatically reset to 100% each time the machine is restarted. In printers with updated firmware, you can use both original and compatible cartridges—as long as the chip is sealed or removed before installation, ensuring the reset is effective. (Pantum models do not have this restriction; you can leave the chip in before and after the reset without any problems.)
In fact, your printer never used sensors to measure the actual amount of toner powder. It relies exclusively on digital counters that, when they reach a certain number of copies, block printing. After the update, the counter will always reset to 100%, but this doesn’t mean the toner has been refilled. Therefore, the best way to know when to refill is to observe the print quality: if you notice that the prints are lighter or have gaps, it’s time to refill/replace the toner/cartridge.
Yes! After resetting, your printer no longer checks the toner chip, allowing you to use compatible consumables without any issues. This means you can choose between original or compatible consumables, ensuring savings without compromising printer performance.
However, it’s important to ensure the compatible toner is suitable for your printer model and is of good quality to avoid print quality issues or premature wear on internal components.
